The Inspiration Behind NEW IN:
The concept for NEW IN stems from a deeply personal experience of Mai Yoneyama. During her hospital stay, unable to use electronic devices and restricted in movement, she borrowed a pen and paper from a nurse. Combining her boredom with the surrounding medical equipment, she sketched a delicate composition using fine ballpoint pen lines. This artwork captures her meticulous observation and thoughtful reflection on life.
During the modeling process, the design was carefully transformed into a full 3D sculpture, enhancing its multi-angle details. A metal support structure was incorporated to achieve both stability and a suspended effect. The base design features a pair of sculpted hands, adding depth and narrative to the piece. The coloring process faithfully replicates the original ballpoint pen texture, while intricate lighting effects depict the serene atmosphere of the medical setting and the girl's gaze into the soft glow.
NEW IN will also be on display at the 2025 GAF Guangzhou Illustration & Art Fair, running from January 3 to January 6, 2024.
